Arapahoe County Voters Overwhelmingly Support State Legislation to Help Local Communities Make Housing More Affordable for Working People

Large majorities of voters in Arapahoe County back Governor Polis and state lawmakers’ solutions to help local communities build more housing that is affordable and to reduce housing costs:

Nearly 4-of-5 voters (79%) in Arapahoe County support a state law allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to be built on single-family home properties, while only 17% oppose it. Allowing ADUs is a non-partisan issue supported by Democrats (86%), Unaffiliated (78%), and Republicans (72%). This proposal is also supported by 78% of homeowners in Arapahoe County.

More than 4-of-5 (84%) voters in Arapahoe County support a state law requiring municipal and county governments to develop housing plans that estimate how much housing is needed in their communities and to adopt policies that provide enough new housing to meet these needs while only 13% oppose it. Support for this proposed law is significantly higher among voters in Arapahoe County than voters statewide (72% support). This proposed law is also a winning issue with critical voting groups, Arapahoe County voters, including homeowners (79%) and Unaffiliated voters (81%) in Arapahoe County.

Arapahoe County voters support (80%) a state law requiring cities and counties to allow more housing to be built near business and shopping districts, bus stops, and train stations and providing financial assistance to cities and counties for these projects, while only 18% oppose it. This proposed law receives significantly higher support in Arapahoe County than among voters statewide (68% support), including support from at least 3-of-4 Unaffiliated voters (77%) and homeowners (75%) in Arapahoe County.

It is clear in this poll that Arapahoe County voters believe the state is in a housing crisis.

Arapahoe County voters are nearly unanimous in their opinion that the cost of renting or buying a home in Colorado is a problem (96% say it’s a problem), including 84% that say it’s a major problem and 12% that say it’s a minor problem. Only 3% of Arapahoe County voters say the cost of renting or buying a home in Colorado is not a problem.

Nine-of-ten voters in Arapahoe County say Colorado does not have enough housing that is affordable to rent or buy (88%), while just 7% say Colorado has enough homes that are affordable to buy or rent.

More than 4-of-5 voters (82%) in Arapahoe County say local governments are not doing enough to reduce the cost of renting or buying a home, which is 12-points higher compared to voters statewide (70%). Meanwhile fewer than 1-in-10 (just 7%) say local governments are doing enough.

These results are based on a poll that included an oversample of 201 registered voters in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The results are accurately distributed to represent registered voters based on party registration, gender, age, and ethnicity. The poll was conducted from January 7-14, 2024, by Keating Research. The worst-case margin of error at the 95% level for 201 respondents is plus or minus 6.9%.
